The Sandringham Summit debate goes on as the talented son of Gimmethegreenlight continues to baffle his fans. The latest episode was the Kzn Guineas where the raging favourite was nipped on the line by a fast finishing Green With Envy on a day when the pace ruled and the wind blew in favour of the front runners. But there is no doubt he is an iron horse. Never out the first three and a form profile of 2,1,2,1,1,2,3,1,2,1,2 he is truly a superstar horse. He also has issues that make his runs even more unbelievable. He hung again in the run on Wednesday but is surely looking for ground now.
Sandringham Summit is clearly not a miler. He is built like bricks, looks a 2000m plus horse and shows in his style that he wants to run on. Whether he got beaten by a better horse on the day in Green With Envy or not, maybe a different argument. But the horse is patently not a miler.
As a two year old he showed his prowess over the 1400 and a mile winning the two best races for juveniles. That's usually a tell tale sign that he will go ground as he grows and he has grown.
With the new connections buying him as a stallion prospect, he is trying to be made into a miler.
The connections are basing it on his breeding only not physique. He is out of Townsend who was a 1400m horse. His sire didn't get 2000m but one can argue that it was a stronger test back than, than the weaker climes of that distance profile these days in South Africa. This horse looks like and is built for the classics.
Even though the July isn't necessarily a stallion making race and a tough race, this iron horse has the right profile. It is a popular race with the world's attention on the horse that wins it. There is no loss in trying to win it.
South African breeders need to change their mindsets quickly and as the world seeks South African breds, they will realise that breeding sprinter/milers will be to the detriment of the breed. We simply cannot compete with Australia in this regard.
